While November is known as the month of gratitude as Thanksgiving is upon us, it’s also home to Infrastructure Security Month! Our friends at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) founded this annual monthly designation to remind people of the importance of considering infrastructure security and resilience from design concept all the way through development and implementation.
CISA shares more about the importance of Infrastructure Security Month: “Much of the nation’s critical infrastructure is interconnected and interdependent, which means an incident in one area can have impacts across multiple sectors, creating disruptions for many communities. Earlier this year, major cyberattacks caused issues up and down the supply chain. Because our nation relies on critical infrastructure for health, energy, communications, and other vital services, it is equally important that everyone understand their role and take action to ensure our critical infrastructure remains strong, secure, and functional.
“Everyone has a part to play in protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure,” said CISA Executive Assistant Director for Infrastructure Security Dr. David Mussington. “This month, CISA asks organizations of all kinds to learn about their shared responsibility in critical infrastructure security and how they can ‘Build It In.’”
Why is investing in security infrastructure necessary for business continuity?
The need for security is ever-growing as threats continue to target businesses from every angle possible. In fact, according to Grandview Research: “The global physical security market size is expected to reach USD 171.0 billion by 2027! Lack of physical security leads to higher rates of burglaries and thefts. Therefore, safeguarding the physical perimeter and individual assets, including expensive technological equipment, has gained importance and is driving the market growth.”
Before we dive in more depth, Markets and Markets gives us a brief breakdown of what physical security actually means: “Physical security refers to restricting physical access of unauthorized people in controlled facilities to prevent damage to valuable hardware, software, network infrastructure, and other assets. Physical security includes security layers that protect personnel, network, and data in physical facilities—such as campuses, buildings, banks, and offices from internal or external physical threats, such as natural disasters, fire, theft, burglary, vandalism, and terrorist attacks.”
Aside from making sure your workplace is using the latest and greatest cyber security defense, it’s just as vital to evaluate your physical security solutions! When was the last time you upgraded your intercoms? Do you have an access control system? Are you still using old school security cameras that don’t offer all the necessary bells and whistles of today’s technology?
Infrastructure Security Month is a great time to conduct an inventory of how secure your business is, evaluate the tech you’ve been using, and see where improvements can be made. Everyone has a part to play in helping keep this world safe. Businesses of all sizes must make it an equal priority to protect their people, assets, and data from today’s many threats.
